Music at Marlfields

Miss Barber is our Music Champion.

At Marlfields we teach Music following the GetSet4Music Scheme. Our Year 4 children also take part in ‘Wider Opportunities’, where they learn to plan an instrument through our ‘Love Music Trust’ expert music teachers. They then have the opportunity to visit the ‘Halle Orchestra’ to experience what a real musical concert perform in the prestigious Halle.

All of our Marlfields children engage in singing assemblies weekly, following themes across the year. They learn songs to perform in key annual celebrations such as Harvest Festival, Christmas nativities and ‘Young Voices’. Our Marlfields musicians will engage in music and be inspired to develop a love of music. They will develop their musical talent, increase their self-confidence and have the space to be creative. Throughout our music curriculum, they will experience a range of musical experiences, gaining a sense of achievement. To read more about our curriculum intent, please click on the link below:

Marlfields Music Policy

Our Curriculum Intention

We teach Music in a consistent and carefully sequenced way across the school, while allowing the children to practise their new skills and be creative. Each lesson begins by identifying that it is a Music lesson, where we learn to build confidence through performing, listening and composing music. By recapping prior learning, we help children connect new knowledge to what they already know. This ensures learning is progressive and builds towards each lesson’s objective. Our lesson flow is followed in every class to provide clarity, structure and continuity.
Marlfields Music Lesson Flow

Key musical vocabulary has been mapped out for every year group and each topic. This language is taught explicitly to support our budding musicians in understanding new concepts with confidence. Important vocabulary from previous years is revisited whenever it is needed to access new learning, ensuring children develop a strong and secure music-specific vocabulary as they move through school.
